Ellie Peterson's life was a complete mystery to her.  She had no memories of her past and could not remember who she really was.  She knew she was the adopted daughter of farmer Harold Peterson, who had lost his wife Eleanor to cancer, and that she lived in the little city of Gurney, North Carolina.  What happened to her before, though, was unknown to her for a long time.
Then, she started having strange dreams and flashes, each one starting to piece together what she may had been in the past.  She had only her adopted father and her best friend Robert Walker helping her try to remember her past.  As the pieces began to come together, she learned she may had been a princess, but from what country?  Then, on one fateful night, she was helping her friend Rob sort out his feelings in the forest when the pair suddenly got trapped in a rapidly spreading forest fire.  The fire triggered Ellie's memories, and with a little help from someone inside her heart, she finally remembered she was a princess . . . an alien princess.
Within that night, she discovered she was the possessor of a special stone, the Nature Crystal, which gave her powers to call forth any of the universal elements.  She could not tap into those elements, but at that time it did not matter.  Then, she called upon the crystal's powers and became her true identity of Princess Elementa.  She was able to stop the forest fire and later on the arsonist who had caused it.
As the memories came flooding back to her, Elementa remembered her legacy back on her home world.  She was the first daughter born in the royal family, which allowed her to possess the Nature Crystal and its powers. Her parents, King Argon and Queen Hydrana, along with Ostro the wizard and the Spirit of the Nature Crystal, trained her dilligently on how to use the crystal properly.  In due time, she developed a telepathic bond with the crystal itself.  She also learned if she ever got separated from the crystal, she would lose her powers temporarily but could find it telepathically.  Finally, if she were separated too long from the crystal, the spirit within it would die, or if the crystal were destroyed, Elementa's powers would be lost forever.
When invaders attempted to conquer Naturia, Elementa fought off one group with her powers, but a second invasion force got through and were on the verge of takeover.  The second group, though, set off a series of volcanic explosions, dooming the planet.  The royal family had no choice but to send their daughter away to keep the future alive.  She blasted off in an escape rocket, only to see her planet explode within minutes of leaving.  The princess was devastated, but the Nature Crystal put her to sleep to preserve her life and sent her on her way to Earth, where she would meet up with her adoptive father with no memory of her past and a new identity.
Princess Elementa has learned to accept her double life and responsibility, and only Robert Walker and Harold Peterson know she and Ellie Peterson are the same person.  When there is trouble lurking, Ellie can summon the power of her Nature Crystal to become Princess Elementa.
