At the Orchid Gardens Estate, Rebecca Hamilton laid in her bed, dying of
pancreatic cancer, with daughter Christina at her side. On her last
breath, she gave Tina three wishes: To remember their wonderful times
together, to pursue her dreams and goals in life, and to wear a special
amulet her mother had worn close to her heart. After Rebecca finally
passed away, Tina vowed to honor her mother's last wishes.
One month later, Tina was sound asleep one night when she suddenly heard
her mother's voice. She awakened, only to see her mother's ghost,
which asked her to go to the greenhouse of all orchids. She did so,
and inside she noticed an unusually thick lush of black orchids.
The ghost, however, revealed a secret passage. Tina followed it into
a lower room with a large computer. The apparition then vanished
and then reappeared on the computer screen.
Tina was surprised to see her mother on the monitor but was happy they
could be together again. There were some surprises she was not expecting,
though, such as her mother's brain powering the computer, Tina being adopted
at two months after her parents had died in a car/train collision, and
the biggest secret of all. When asked about a mysterious heroine
called the Black Orchid, Tina admitted to having vague memories, such as
the beautiful costume, the mastery of disguise, being bulletproof, and
possessing super-strength and flight abilities. Rebecca then revealed
that she herself was the Black Orchid, acquiring her powers through the
Amulet of Mystery, the very amulet she had given Tina on her deathbed!
As Tina was still trying to figure everything out, the amulet glowed, telling
her there was danger somewhere nearby. Her mother said her adopted
daughter's heart was tuned into the amulet's special frequency, which enabled
her to see in her mind what danger had befallen on someone. When
Tina knew she had to do something to rescue an innocent man from a gang
of criminals, Rebecca stated she needed only to summon the amulet's powers
to become the Black Orchid herself. Tina, feeling the connection
to the amulet, quickly transformed into the heroine and flew into the night
to rescue the man. Her bulletproof powers protected her from the
gunfire, and she captured them in their car. After lifting the whole
car, she took it and the crooks to the police. Grateful for her help,
the police decided to make her a member of law enforcement and keep her
appearances as secretive as possible. Since that time, when the Amulet
of Mystery glows for danger, Tina knows for a fact the Black Orchid will
not be too far away!
